  23. This is the freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh. There is also
  24. a commercial version of Eudora called Eudora Pro (Version 2.0
  25. and above).  If you would like information about the commercial
  26. version, a brief description is provided in the Balloon Help menu of
  27. this freeware. Select About Commercial Eudora to display this dialog.
  28. You can also subscribe to the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies
  29. (QUEST) mailing list by selecting QUEST Mailing List from the Balloon
  30. Help menu. This list will provide subscribers with occasional
  31. information about Eudora, Eudora Pro, and other QUEST
  32. products.

  34. The latest freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh can be found on
  35. ftp.qualcomm.com, in the directory quest/eudora/mac/1.5. The Macintosh
  36. freeware user manual can also be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the
  37. directory quest/eudora/mac/documentation. The user manual is formatted
  38. in Microsoft Word format.

  40. Both the freeware and its documentation can also be retrieved via
  41. e-mail using QUALCOMM's list server. To obtain the freeware, send a

  73. To install the Eudora freeware, just copy it onto your hard disk.

  80. The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
  81. configuration information in order to be able to send and receive
  82. mail.
  83.  
  84. Select Settings... from the Special Menu.  The Settings dialog is then
  85. displayed with the Getting Started settings selected.
  86.  
  87. The fields you need to review are:
  88.  
  89. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer
  90. that runs a POP3 server.  This is the account to which your e-mail
  91. messages are delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora
  92. program on your PC.  In this field, type your login name for this
  93. account and the full (domain) name of the computer, separating them
  94. with an "@" sign.  For example, if your assigned login name is
  95. "carolyn," and the name of the computer where you receive e-mail is
  96. "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" in this field.
  97.  
  98. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, as it appears here, is
  99. displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing
  100. mail.  It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you
  101. send.
  102.  
  103. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail
  104. Transfer Protocol) server program is necessary.  You need not have a
  105. login to this computer, but you must have access to it through your
  106. network.  If the computer on which you have your POP account is also an
  107. SMTP server, leave this field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name of
  108. the computer you want to use as your SMTP server.
  109.  
  110. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
  111. address.  If you wish to use a return address other than your POP
  112. account, enter it here.

  116. COMPATIBILITY
  117. --------------

  119. System 6
  120. --------
  121. Symptom: Eudora refuses to run.
  122. Explanation: Sorry, Eudora does not run under System 6.
  123. Workaround: None.
  124.  
  125.  
  126. AppleTalk Remote Access:
  127. -----------------------
  128. Symptom: you get an alert that says "the selected port is in use".
  129. Explanation:  If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from
  130. Remote Access Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use
  131. the Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may
  132. be unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications
  133. Toolbox and ARA.
  134. Workaround: Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have this problem.

  136.  
  137. Apple Modem Tool
  138. ----------------
  139. Symptom:  Eudora cannot login to your server, instead timing out during
  140. the navigation process.
  141. Explanation:  Eudora is incompatible with version 1.0 of the Apple
  142. Modem Tool.
  143. Solution: You must use version 1.1 or later of the Apple Modem Tool, or
  144. the Hayes Modem Tool.  We recommend the use of version 1.5 of the Apple
  145. Modem Tool.
  146.  
  147.  
  148. Moire
  149. -----
  150. Symptom: 68040-based Macintosh crashes when Eudora is launched.
  151. Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when
  152. run with the 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode.
  153. Workaround: We suggest the freeware screensaver "DarkSide".
  154.  
  155.  
  156. NOW Utilities 4.0/SuperBoomerang
  157. -------------------------------
  158. Symptom: When launched, Eudora complains about being unable to open
  159. certain mailboxes, claiming they are "too large".
  160. Explanation: The "reopen documents" feature of SuperBoomerang is the
  161. problem It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really not
  162. necessary for Eudora anyway.
  163. Solution: You may disable this option by using the "Disable Re-Launch"
  164. menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang control panel.
  165.  
  166. Symptom: You cannot set your application to open TEXT files or your
  167. attachments folder.
  168. Explanation: Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 interfere with
  169. this aspect of Eudora.
  170. Solution: Upgrade to NOW Utilities 4.0.1 or later.
  171.  
  172. Symptom: Eudora crashes when printing.
  173. Explanation: NOW Up-to-Date Reminder 2.0's Show Battery Status option
  174. causes crashes when Eudora is printing.
  175. Workaround: Turn Show Battery Status off.  NOW is aware of the problem,
  176. and has promised to fix it.

  178.  
  179. Norton Directory Assistance
  180. -------------------------
  181. Symptom: The attachment folder does not change, even if you set it with
  182. the dialog.
  183. Explanation: Norton Directory Assistance interferes with this aspect of
  184. Eudora.
  185. Workaround: Hold down the option key before clicking the button in the
  186. Attachments dialog, and keep it down until the Standard File dialog
  187. opens.

  189.  
  190. Global Village PowerPort Modems
  191. ------------------------------
  192. Symptom: Attachments are sometimes corrupted or characters are lost in
  193. text messages.
  194. Explanation: Flow control in Powerbooks is very poor.
  195. Workaround: The best solution is to use version 1.5 of the Apple Modem
  196. Tool, set to "Software MNP" error correction.

  199. CAP/aufs
  200. --------
  201. Symptom: Mailboxes are frequently corrupted.
  202. Explanation: CAP/aufs has a bug that causes problems with Eudora and a
  203. few other programs.
  204. Solution: A patch is available (#168); be sure you have it.

  206.  
  207. KA-Share
  208. --------
  209. Symptom: Attachments saved to KA-Share volumes cannot be opened from
  210. within Eudora.
  211. Explanation: KA-Share does not implement file id's.
  212. Workaround: Do not put your attachment folder on a KA-Share volume.

  214.  
  215. Apollo
  216. ------
  217. Symptom: Crashes.
  218. Explanation: Version 1.0 of the Apollo application launching utility
  219. cannot handle long window names (such as Eudora generates) if
  220. configured to sort windows alphabetically.
  221. Workaround: Use the Window menus page of the Preferences dialog to set
  222. the sorting to front-to-back.

  225. Greg's Buttons
  226. -------------
  227. Symptom: Dialup Eudora does not work.
  228. Explanation: Versions of Greg's Buttons prior to 3.0 may interefere
  229. with the Communications Toolbox.
  230. Solution: Upgrade to Greg's Buttons 3.0 or later.

  232.  
  233. FileGuard 2.5.1
  234. -------------
  235. There are reports of problems between Eudora and FileGuard 2.5.1.
  236.  
  237.  
  238. DoubleScroll 2.0.3
  239. ----------------
  240. Symptom: Eudora windows scroll off into oblivion.
  241. Explanation: DoubleScroll has a bug.
  242. Workaround: None.  The author of DoubleScroll has promised a fix.

  245. MenuChoice 1.9
  246. -------------
  247. Symptom: Choosing an item from a submenu of the Apple menu causes
  248. strange dialogs and crashes in Eudora.
  249. Explanation: MenuChoice 1.9 has a bug.
  250. Solution: Get MenuChoice 2.0 or later.

  253. AutoDoubler
  254. -----------
  255. Symptom: None
  256. Explanation: Eudora normally uses "asynchronous" i/o to files, enabling
  257. smoother operations to fileservers.  AutoDoubler interferes with
  258. asynchronous i/o.
  259. Workaround: Eudora automatically disables asynchronous i/o if it finds
  260. AutoDoubler on your system.  StuffIt SpaceSaver (Aladdin Systems) does
  261. not suffer from this problem, so you could also switch to that.

  263.  
  264. Mac340
  265. -------
  266. Symptom: Strange font displays in Mac340 and/or Eudora.
  267. Explanation: Eudora and Mac340 both use private fonts, and there is an
  268. id conflict.
  269. Workaround: Use a font other than "Mishawaka" in Eudora.
